The Gateway Programme NCEA & Work Experience

Formal work experience with industry based NCEA standards while you are still at school provides valuable insight into a possible career choice. - Check with your Schools Career Advice Team to find out if they run this programme. Student Work Placement: Students work as an unpaid intern for one day each per week, for a period of 5-10 weeks, in an industry area they are considering training for with after finishing school


Learn more about the industry you are interested in:

When you get work experience you see first-hand what happens in a typical day on the job. You can:

  • get an idea of what you like and don't like about that job

  • ask people doing the job about how they got into it and what they like about it

  • meet people who you can ask for help to find a job later on

  • learn about all the other jobs in the workplace and if you might like them.

You study for NCEA credits

  • Theory NCEA unit standards are completed during your Gateway timetabled subject or in your study periods at school.

  • Practical NCEA unit standards (if applicable) are assess by Industry Assessors in the workplace.
